Special thanks to U-VU Networks for
assistance with encoding!
RealVideo is extremely cool. but it doesn't translate well over a modem with
high action scenes. I tested the following streams with a 28.8, X2, and
dual-B ISDN, and the only one that really streamed right was at dual-ISDN.
The 28.8kbps encoding is just too minimal (looks more like a slide-show, but
the Audio is OK), and the 56kpbs Modem encoding is Livable.
I'm in the process of breaking the files up into smaller chunks, but for
reference, the original 8 minute, 45 second clip was:
- Original uncompressed .avi, as encoded: 550+ megs
- 128k RealVideo File: 5.4 megs
- 56k RealVideo File: 2.3 megs
- 28.8k RealVideo File: 1.4 megs
As you can see, the compression that happens here is astonishing, but it's
still not enough to deliver a stream at decent quality over a Modem. So,
unless you are fortunate enough to have a high-speed connection to the
Internet, I recommend you get the Real Player, install it, and then download
the clips for later playback.
The Real player is still very useful, as moving 500+ meg files over the
Internet would not be feasible even for those on a T1, and the quality is
quite nice with the 128k files.
Quick note on the downloadable files:
I've spent a bunch of time
getting the source material, getting it encoded, and burned
a bunch of time/disk space to make it available. If you want to mirror the
files on your own Web Site , then send mail to isaac@mirafiori.com before you act.
If you steal this stuff, then the Gods will undoubtedly wreak Havoc on your
Person, and Wrath from the Heavens really sucks.
Ask me first, I'm really a reasonable guy, and I like to Share.
"Enough of this. What about the CONTENT?"
OK. The clip you see below is my first attempt, and has some fun stuff.
0.00-->2:45, is an original X1/9 ad, plus Showroom trailer.
2:48-->5:36, is the Spider 2000 ad, plus the Showroom trailer.
5:36-->8:45, is Remy Julienne. Fun stuff, showing Fiats being beaten beyond
any sensible margin in Stunts.

Then I broke 'em up.
I'm not even going to bother to encode the 28.8
Modem stuff, as the quality is not good enough to merit it. I'm letting you
folks download the files, and downloading the 128k version is not very big
especially if you want to be able to 'view' the film with any kind of
quality.

Recently, I tried my hand again with both Real G2 encoding and Microsoft
.ASF (for media player).
The Material is AWESOME, it's a film (real, no trickery here) of a guy
running an old 12-cyl Ferarri through pre-dawn Paris at breathtaking speeds.
The Video is quite dark in places, but the Audio track is sure to raise your
pulse a bit.
The G2 Surestream copy was certainly the best for
Audio, but the ASF files is much larger and clearer on the Video. What do
you think?

If you don't have it, you need the Player of your choice. They are free, so click
