Colin Reynolds' 1977 Fiat 128 3P

(Australian Spec.)

  • Worked 1300cc SOHC
  • Weber 32/36 DGAE Carb (on port-matched intake manifold)
  • 4-2-1 Extractors

  • 5-speed manual (Fiat-sourced)

  • Front: Koni Sports SAs
  • Rear: Koni Sports SAs, 4-leaf 5" Spring

  • 13x5.5 Delta Mags - Australian Made for Lada Samara (correct offset)
  • Michelin MXT 165/75/13

  • Standard Front Discs and Rear Drums (have already asked Anthony Stoner about rear disc conversion [thanks Anthony!])

  • "Rally" front Bumper (it came that way!)
  • Rear spoiler (Don't panic! It is Italian and fits perfectly - from a wrecked Alfasud)

  • Stock, except for replacement of some cheap plastic fittings with real stuff.
  • A "period" (1970's) Fujitsi separate component stereo. The tuner even has dial (ie non-digital) auto-seek! (The stereo was probably the hardest thing to find for the car, so far).

I saw the car at a used car dealer while travelling in early '98 and fell in love with it instantly. But unfortunately, I didn't have the money they were asking for it at the time. Thankfully, I was back there again about three months later. They had marked it down substantially, so I took it for a drive and then talked them down even further (the steering rack badly needed reconditioning). And so it came home with me! I probably tinker with it more than drive it, but both are fun. (it now has a ‘new’ Fiat/Lancia engine, gearbox and assorted other stuff). It is definitely not a ‘town’ car (the Airflows and Cam don’t stop arguing until about 5000rpm). This is OK by me, as I’m a stanch supporter of the view that if you are going to drive hard, then you should only do it out on open roads or under competition conditions, where you are likely to be the only casualty of your mistakes. The "Rally"-style (split) front bumper was on it when I brought it and looks like an original fitting. I’ve never seen another like it here in Oz, and would be interested to know its history.
