Formerly Owned Vehicles (all categories: restored, drivers, partscars, etc.)

196X Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Rescued from a friend's farm in southeastern PA, where it had sat for MANY years. Broke in half unloading it from my trailer in the garage. Sold on eBay to a guy from Wisconsin who was building his dream Giulia Spider part-by-part. He got many good parts from this one at a bargain price.
1961 Lancia Appia Vignale Cabriolet Parts car located in northern California in late 2004. Stripped from the firewall back and cut in half. The front half is still intact and living in Garagemahal.
196X Triumph Spitfire Bought at an auction, stripped in place (yes, at the auction site), and scrapped all in one day. The French blue nose of this car still hangs in Garagemahal as a "Jolly Roger" warning to other British cars who might otherwise dare enter.
1966 Corsair Sailstar Purchased new by my Grandfather and remained in the family until 2007; I was sailing on this boat before I was born, and ever since. Unfortunately, it slipped from the Family's posession when my Grandfather wanted it to move on and no one else had any place to keep it. Has been recommissioned the "Second Wind" and is being enjoyed again by new owners.
1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider Purchased from Thad Kirk, cleaned up a bit, and sold on eBay as a parts car to a buyer in California.
1968 Porsche 912 Rescued from a friend's farm in southeastern PA and sold as a parts car on eBay to a nice kid from Ottawa, Canada.
1971 Alfa Romeo GTV One of two GTV parts cars from southeastern Pennsylvania. Parted out, parts sold on eBay, remainder recycled for scrap metal.
1971 Fiat 850 Sport Spider Parts car donated to me from a retiree in Northern New Jersey who finally realized he was never going to do anything with it but let it further rot in his driveway. Completely stripped it over a few days time on my trailer.
1971 Dodge Dart A free car received from one of my mother's friends. Used this car temporarily through a Buffalo winter while in college to preserve the more valuable cars. Was an interesting time!
1971 MFG Winner Rescued from a friend's farm in southeastern PA, cleaned up, and sold on eBay.
1972 Datsun Fairlady Z Not a 240Z. This was a Japanese-market Fairlady that was brought in through the military (see decal and Japanese license plate) as a grey-market car. 2-litre engine, right-hand drive, mirrors on the fenders, and "Fairlady" badges throughout. Bought at a local auction, cleaned up, and sold on eBay.

1973 Fiat 850 Sport Spider Parts car donated to me from a kid on Long Island that gave up on the thought of restoration and needed to get the car out of his parents' flower garden. Stripped it with some friends one afternoon and installed the 903cc drivetrain in my white '67 850 Spider.
1973 MG Midget Got this one from a former work associate who needed it gone from his property. I cleaned it up a bit and found a good new home for it through eBay.
1974 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe The second Fiat I ever owned/drove. Bought it in Huntington, NY and sold it several years later in college in Buffalo. Only had 39,000 miles on it. I should have never sold this car and if anyone knows where it is today, I'd love to have it back!
1974 Fiat 128 Sport Coupe A parts car that was rescued from a friend's farm in southeastern PA. Completely stripped of all usable parts before it was scrapped.
1975 Dodge Tioga Motorhome Purchased from my Grandfather. Used to move out to Tucson for grad school. Used it a bit out there and unfortunately had to sell it due to lack of space at the apartment complex.
1976 Fiat 124 Sport Spider Very nice '76 Spider. Purchased locally from the northern Philadelphia area and partially restored. Sold in October 2007 to new Fiat friend Jeremy in the St. Louis, MO area. Nice to hear regular updates/improvements/adventures of the car and its new owners.
1976 Lancia Scorpion #00415 Purchased as a parts car from New Jersey. Stripped down to the shell and found it too good to scrap. Sold it on eBay to race driver Sterling Strittmatter in Ohio and delivered it to his garage. Several years later it re-emerged as a successful (and gorgeous) SCCA racer. Congratulations, Sterling!
1976 Lancia Scorpion #00565 My very first Scorpion. Traded my friend Dan some parts for it. Needed too much for me to restore, so I partially stripped it down, then sold it to a friend in West Virginia. This car started both of us down the Scorpion path; since then, I've owned about 6 and he, at last count, had 8!
1978 Fiat 124 Spider My first-ever parts car. Purchased from an ad in Newsday on Long Island for its rear differential when the diff failed in my '81 Spider. Was completely stripped down before it was scrapped.
1978 Fiat X1/9 Abandoned to me as a project shell by a friend in New York. Moved it several times and stored it for a long while, and eventually donated it to a guy in Ohio that was looking for a good solid builder shell.
1978 Toyota Landcruiser "FJ-40" My very first Landcruiser, purchased when I was in college up in Buffalo. Installed a used engine and drove it through the winter there. It was ugly, but TOUGH and reliable. 'Sold' it to a guy who wanted it for use around his farm.
1979 Fiat Brava A complete 4-door automatic Brava parts car rescued from a friend's farm in southeastern PA. Completely stripped of all usable parts and scrapped.
1979 Fiat Brava A complete 2-door automatic Brava parts car that was rescued from a friend's farm in southeastern PA. Completely stripped of all usable parts and scrapped.
1979 Fiat Spider 2000 A rare partscar purchased in 1990 because it was offered to me cheap. It was rare because it had an automatic transmission, air conditioning, and a maroon interior. Completely stripped down before it was scrapped.
1979 Mercedes-Benz 280SE My "Uncle" Leon bought this European-spec car in Germany when it was almost new, and drove it until he passed away in 2003. I didn't do anything with it since assuming ownership of it until my friend Josh in Austin, Texas, needed a new car for his expecting wife. They brought their new son Ian home from the hospital in this car. Uncle Leon would be proud.
1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Brougham This car was in the "back 40" of our new property in Douglassville. I managed to get it to roll (had no wheels/tires as found) and actually run on starting fluid. Was sold on Craigslist in January 2008 to a couple of young guys who planned to enter it in a local demolition derby.
1980 Chevrolet Chevette My very first car, a hand-me-down from my Mother (it was her first-ever new car, to my Grandfather, to me. Great first car to learn to drive without fear of breaking anything expensive. Eventually scrapped due to rust, but the great memories live on.
1980 Fiat Brava Sedan A very rare fuel-injected 5-speed Fiat Brava Sedan. This was the famous "OBR (Operation Brava Rescue) car, saved literally from the center of a junkyard in El Paso Texas. Installed an engine, drove it home, and used it for a while before trading it to friend Cap'm Woody. Woody drove it for many years until he was rear-ended, totalling the poor Brava.
1980 Fiat Spider 2000 Anniversary A very rare Fiat Spider 2000 Anniversary edition model (number 492) built to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Pininfarina. Had numerous unique parts, including leather interior, 14-inch wheels (first time offered on a Spider), brown interior appointments, "Champagne Metallic" paint, and individually-numbered plaques. Bought in Tucson, restored, driven across the country, and sold in New York to an Italian Schweppes executive.
1980 Fiat Spider 2000 Purchased from a disappointed dad in Virginia as a non-running, abandoned, father-son project. Was restored and sold and delivered to a Northeastern customer in the Spring of 2009.
1981 Fiat Spider 2000 Parts car purchased as a result of a sad story. Previous owner and his wife met, fell in love, married, and raised a family with this car. When she died suddenly, he parked it behind his garage so that he wouldn't be reminded of her by seeing it. Finally, he offered it for sale, and I bought it. Unfortunately, it was only good as a parts car by then, so I parted it out.
1981 Fiat Spider 2000 The car that started it all. This was my very FIRST ever Fiat, purchased with afterschool-job money when I was just 16 years old. Considering all the ones I've owned since, it left quite an impression and will always hold a very special place in my heart.
1981 Lancia Beta Coupe A really nice fuel-injected, non-sunroof Coupe purchased as a parts-donor for my first-ever Lancia, a black 1981 Zagato. I actually ended up driving this car several thousands of miles while going to school in Buffalo. Eventually totalled by an old lady in a new Lincoln who pulled right out in front of me.
1981 Lancia Beta Zagato A really nice fuel-injected Zagato - my first-ever Lancia. Received the mechanicals from the totalled '81 Beta Coupe and then, at the end of a very long weekend, it caught fire on it's maiden test drive and burned to the ground.
1982 Fiat Ritmo Cabrio A very rare (3 known in North America) grey-market car I found in California, made road-worthy, and 'killed' in a horrific rollover in Colorado on my way back to PA. The Bertone-designed and built car gave its life to spare mine; it's incredible integrity was obvious after seeing the car after the accident: I walked away without a scratch. Its parts live on in my current Strada.
1982 Fiat Spider 2000 Parts car that I inherited from the estate of my late friend Joe LaSala and was owned by me VERY briefly before being parted completely and hauled off to the scrapyard. Just as Joey's memory and spirit live on, so do the parts of this now-deceased Fiat.
1982 Fiat Spider 2000 Parts car purchased from a semi-famous upstate-NY racer. Never left his yard - I parted it out at his place in ONE VERY LONG DAY.
1982 Fiat Spider 2000 A really nice Spider purchased out of Kentucky in 2004. Had all the right modifications: sport springs/KYB shocks, ANSA exhaust, and remote CD player. Sold to my brother in fall of 2008 and he's been enjoying it in Louisiana ever since.
1982 Lancia Zagato ("Beta Spider") A car that was pulled from a Long Island junkyard. Had it running long enough to hear it run (and watch it catch fire), and then stripped it down completely.
1982 Lancia Beta Zagato A really nice fuel-injected '82 Zagato purchased from a used car lot in Columbus, Ohio that had several. This car was one of my first restorations and took a few prizes afterward. Sadly, I totalled it in North Carolina when it cartwheeled end-over-end on the side of a mountain.
1983 Bertone X1/9 Parts car purchased from a friend in PA and parted out where it sat, behind his barn, over ONE LONG DAY.
1983 Pininfarina Spider Purchased this one when I was in high school as well. Needed an engine and other work, and I learned most of what I know about Fiat mechanicals from this car. This was the car that transported me up to my freshman year at college in Buffalo. Sold it the following summer to pay for those college-related bills!
1983 Subaru BRAT GL Turbo A pretty rare car. The Turbo BRAT was only manufactured for 2 years, and only came with an automatic transmission. This was a great car for off-roading, commuting, and for my after-school job delivering auto parts while in college in Buffalo. Eventually sold it to my brother.
1984 Honda Prelude Purchased this POS from my friend Perry with one goal in mind - to drive it out west to deliver a Fiat 2-litre engine to a Brava that I rescued from an El Paso, Texas wrecking yard. This Honda provided some interesting stories along the way. Once the mission was accomplished (the Brava ran/drove with the new engine), the Honda was donated to my El Paso host, Wiley, who sold in into slavery in Mexico.
1984 Toyota Van Purchased this one cheap while living in Buffalo. Got it running and three friends and I traveled the perimeter of the U.S. and to the Yukon, Alaska, Northwest Territories, and the Arctic Ocean. Interesting mid-engine automatic with dual air conditioning and other funky features.
1985 Nissan 4x4 Pickup KingCab Was my Dad's truck before I took over. Was a great truck for accessing remote parts of Arizona for graduate research work. One spring break my buddy Ken and I drove this truck to Los Cabos, Baja, Mexico. Our own mini 'Baja 1000' race. A trip we'll remember for a lifetime.
1985 Pininfarina Spider A very rare low-original-miles 1985.5 "rack-and-pinion" Spider. Found at a used car lot in Clearwater Florida and bought sight-unseen. Installed a new-used transmission and took care of many other needed repairs. Eventually sold to new friend Dan in central New Jersey, who still enjoys it to this day.
1986 Audi 4000 Commemorative Series Quattro The ultimate winter car. Incredible bad-weather winter driver. Less than 90,000 original miles, leather interior, power sunroof/windows/locks, and a new set of Bridgestone Blizzaks. A car built and used for a single purpose. Sold to my cousin Dan in Maine in 2007; we still miss this car!
1986 Audi Commemorative Series GT Anniversary Edition Enjoyed every minute I ever spent with this car. Bought at an auction and restored to regular driver condition. Wonderful car. Rare red leather interior, digital dashboard, and other features unique to the Anniversary CS GT. Eventually sold on eBay - to good friend Chris Judd, who put many thousands more miles on her as a daily driver.
1986 Bertone X1/9 Parts car purchased on eBay because the price was worth the Panasport wheels alone. Drove down to the Maryland shore with my buddy Chris to haul the car back to his place. Tried a new battery and it roared to life with the first turn of the key. Stripped it in Chris' driveway in a single day. As with all partscars, the parts lived to serve another day.
1986 Chevrolet Celebrity Got this car as a reliable beater for my 80-plus-year-old Aunt Anna when her ol' Buick finally died. Purchased and delivered to her in the same day; she's been using it ever since!
1986 Volkswagen Vanagon The only VW I've ever had, was a great truck for me. Used for camping, towing, and commuting. HUGE sunroof was a very rare (and functional) option. Sold on eBay to an artist from Washington, D.C.
1987 Bertone X1/9 Purchased this nice X1/9 with very low miles on it, and including a broken Corsa body kit. Had to remove the kit when restoring the body, and then repaired all the stuff that needed repair/replacement prior to selling it.
1987 Ford Escort GL Wagon Hate me for saying this if you will, but this is the overall best car I've ever owned. Drove it for almost 100,000 miles and never needed to do any major work to it. Converted it to "GT" look and installed cruise control and a rear shelving system myself. 50+ MPG from the 1.9-liter throttle-body injected 4-cylinder with 5-speed. Camped/slept extensively in this car, towed cars with it, hauled engines, and loved every minute. Handled, rode, and drove great. Wish I had never sold it!
1988 Chevrolet G30/Grumman General-purpose hauler/gas-guzzler. Bought on eBay needing an engine and installed a fuel-injected 350 "crate motor." Drove this truck exactly twice: once from New York to Arizona and back in 1999 to retrieve my '68 Spider and all of my worldly possessions when I moved back east, and then from New York to Pennsylvania when I moved there in 2003. I hauled the Spider in the box with about 12,000 pounds of "stuff". A good truck that sat FAR too much until sold to a local produce farmer in February of 2008.
1989 Ford Taurus SHO One of the most powerful, comfortable cars I've ever owned. Great for the numerous cross-country trips I took with it. Rescued it from a wrecking yard in Tucson, Arizona and restored it there, then sold it in St.Petersburg, Florida several years later.
1991 Isuzu Trooper II Abandoned to me by a co-worker. I cleaned it up, repaired a few things, sold it on eBay, and handed the proceeds to the co-worker.
1991 Mazda Navajo LX A Ford Explorer Sport with Mazda badges. Purchased at an auction with a former co-worker. He used it for a while, then sold it to me. I used it for a while myself for commuting and errands before selling it through Craigslist. A nice truck with 76k original miles on it and a strong 4.0-liter V6, 5-speed, and 4WD.
1991 Toyota Camry DX Abandoned to me by a friend after I helped him buy a newer/nicer car at a local auction. Cleaned it up, repaired a few things, sold it on eBay, and handed the proceeds to my friend.
1993 Ford Escort Station Wagon Another car with my Dad as previous owner. This was the second-latest vehicle I ever owned. It was a great, economical car that crossed the country with me several times when I was living in Tucson. Smooth and comfortable and very efficient.
