Your method should work, in theory, however, with the head on the engine you can't tell if there are any bubbles hiding in there.

There really is no need to replace all the fuses due to age. But some simple maintenance can go a long way to improve their function. Take each fuse out of it's holder and clean/polish the ends a bit (I typcally rub them on my blue jeans to remove any corrosion). Also some fine sand paper can used t...
