Speedo not working

The speedo on my 66 1500 Spider was not working when I got it. I took the speed out connected it a drill and the needle does move. Suspecting the cable, I got a new one. Still, no go. What should I check next? Does the speed drive on the gearbox fail?

Re: Sipea ignition switch question

When I pushed the plunger down, I could feel the contact open and close on that central plunger. Will post pics once I open it up.

Also, will keep an eye open on Jay switch sources.

Re: Sipea ignition switch question

Jay switch. I've not found any online source. There's a guy in Bombay who deals in parts and has one (or at least one) in his stock. I bought the Sipea from him. Accepts only Paytm (an Indian wallet) -- which I did not have. Luckily, I had a VW parts guy/friend in Mumbai who was willing to pay cash ...

Re: Sipea ignition switch question

I opened the Sipea today. It has all three plungers. So it is operating as intended. So, INT is NOT always a switched terminal . In some models like mine it is an always hot terminal. Bummer -- make buying replacements that are switched a bit harder since they don't all seem to be connected the same...

Re: Sipea ignition switch question

I just realized that the plungers can be removed and replaced without splitting apart the electrical portion. There are loading slots in the back and if the disc is aligned properly, the plungers will pop out (careful - easy to lose). The metal disc washer in the middle even has a cut out to enable ...

Re: Sipea ignition switch question

I'm using these small self tapping screws. I turn down the head of the screw to 4mm dia (2 screws shown turned and unturned heads for comparison)and insert them from the switch side of the electrical contact. Seems to work well -- it sits in the recess and does not interfere with the rotating disc. ...

Re: Sipea ignition switch question

Good point!! If the plunger were broken, it would explain why INT is always HOT. I'll remove the electrical portion and see if there are any indications. I have dissected the Jay switch and have small screws to reattach the 2 halves back together. WhatsApp Image 2018-08-07 at 9.36.16 PM.jpeg However...

Sipea ignition switch question

While redoing the harness on my 1500Cabrio (burnt from a short), I noticed the existing switch (Indian Jay brand repro of the Sipea) was not performing as expected. The wiring diag requires an ignition with 4 terminals -- #30 - from battery #50 - to starter (hot only when starting) INT - (which I le...

Re: Alternator wiring question

Often one terminal in the ignition is hot all the time (#30). This is powered from the alternator or regulator or even the starter all of which have connections to battery. I assumed the ign terminal on this alternator is for that and don't think the internal regulator in the alternator needs a swit...
