Gates Timing Belt T068

Post by fastfiat81 » Tue Jan 23, 2018 8:40 pm

For those that have gates timing belts- is the word "Gates" written all over it? The belt I handled obviously didn't. Just the part number "068" and what I *think* is the manufacture date.

We all know how companies buy out others and repackage parts. If I buy a gates belt I want a gates belt. Does anyone have a photo they can post?

There's two questions with a timing belt, who made it and when was it made. Gates bought an existing U.K. belt maker some years ago and moved timing belt production to Dumfries, Scotland. So a Gates belt made in the last decade should be labeled "made in the United Kingdom". One of the Dumfries engineers is a regular on Guy Croft's forum.

As a vendor who offers Gates... perhaps we are a little better qualified to answer your question.

Richard is partially correct in that the 1" wide / performance is indeed manufactured in the UK. We just imported 40 or 50 of them as I recall last month. But Gates has not relocated the a significant amount manufacturing of "timing belts" to Scotland nor are there any plans to do so.

The "T068" (which is the Gates reference number) belt is manufactured in North America.

That said, we prefer Flennor, because they manufacture for our market more frequently - where as for Gates our timing belts are somewhat of a minor item.

The standard 3/4" belt I handled yesterday was made in the UK. I have a couple more in route to compare over the next couple of days.

Ramzi,

As a vendor who's been selling Fiat timing belts longer than most of us have owned Fiats, I'll bet you can tell us how to spot a belt that's sat on someone's shelf too long. I'll bet you even know where to find and read the manufacturing date on a Gates belt. That kind of vendor info that would be really useful to this community and might even help sell a few additional belts.

So Gates is selling timing belts in their "Gates boxes" that are not manufactured by Gates themselves. Interesting.

Guess I will try Dayco next.

Richard,

What I can tell you is that stating that ALL belts manufactured by Gates are of UK origin is at best misleading and therefor was in need of correction. I can also tell you that we purchase directly from the manufacturer when it comes to timing belts so should you desire a "born on date" we can certainly accommodate... so the short answer would be yes I can.

Not sure how much help that would be to this or any other community though. I would suggest that accurate information when it comes to any part no matter where it comes from is indeed of value to the community.

Oh... And Ive owned Fiats for much longer than Ive been selling timing belts. Selling timing belts blossomed from a hobby... not the other way round.

Here's a good Twin Cam timing belt thread from several years ago:

Here's a photo of a Gates belt I carry in a touring parts kit. No clue as to the date.
