85.5 spider engine color?

Post by friedman » Sat Nov 17, 2018 8:35 am

In the past I have always painted Fiat engine blocks gray but this motor appears to have been black. Anyone know what color this year engine block should be?

Given the very low rate of production at the end I could believe black was original. Take off the blanking plate for the block mounted distributor and see if there are any traces of a color change. Last time I looked I could not find a good oil-based engine enamel in the factory color. Perhaps the last owner couldn't either.

I'm 99.9% sure that the block on my 85.5 Spider volumex was gray just like any other 124 block I've seen

Even my integrale blocks have been gray

I believe the closest enamel color to Fiat factory engine blocks available in the U.S. is called "Ford Gray" or "Light Ford Gray" or "Old Ford Gray" but not "New Ford Gray". It's offered in many lines of engine enamel as well as farm and implement paint. Tractor Supply is one source. It was used on old Ford tractors, the same ones that used GL1 transmission oil.

After careful scrutiny of the block it appears to actually be black.
