Rear “seat” upholstery question

Post by Klc356 » Sat Feb 02, 2019 5:30 pm

Rear seat question.

I had seats out when I got the car. I am reupholstering them now. There are 2 tabs on rail. I am not sure what the connection point is in the car. Is it just to slide under top backrest? My old upholstery has slots cut in to accommodate them but new one does not have slots. I don’t want to cut into my new seat cover.
Can someone explain how they dealt with this.

Just curious...where did you buy your upholstery kit?

Vinyl or leather? Are you satisfied with the quality?

I'm about to order one :D

Vicks full set for 299 in vinyl. I have done back seat first and very happy so far. Does not come with hog rings or pliers so you need to get that. Will do front seats this week. These were on sale. I also got carpet set that was on sale too.

Those are mounting tabs. On my 82 the tabs have holes which are then screwed into the back metal of car. You should already have the holes there if you look closely. They hold the rear seat in place

Got my set from Rock Auto, actually made by Acme Auto, $308 right now.
Well made and generally fit well, came with hog rings and pliers.
Rear seat and front seat bottoms no problem fitting the covers.
Front seat backs and head restraints needed fitting by upholstery shop as they were very tight to fit especially the head restraints.
Looking back probably needed to use the plastic sheeting and vacuum cleaner trick to shrink down the foam to fit them in.

It's been a long time since I did this, can you just pull the upholstery up underneath the tabs and hog ring it to the rail? I went with custom upholstery this time around. The kit I installed years ago, the back seat was easy, the fronts not so much. Ended up taking them to a shop and they still never fit right.

Restoring the '79 for the second time, you're never finished ;)

Just wait until you get to the head restraints

Success.
My problem is lack of instruction and winging it on the seat back and bottom.

I’ve used coat hanger and hair bands to replace some of the inner workings. Cut hangers into the lining and attached hair bands to replicate original. Close but not perfect.
