Gear reduction starter wiring question

Post by Ritmo75 » Tue Sep 10, 2019 1:26 pm

I just got a new GR starter for the Strada. Problem is the new starter only has two leads going in (battery and ignition switch I believe) and the old Bosch starter has three. I’ve been researching and think this is a field winding lead or whatever.

Can I just tape this extra wire out of the way and forget about it or does it need hooked up to something?

Many thanks

I hooked it up without the third wire and it seems to work. The gear reduction starter is the way to go- Fires up instantly. I should have gone this route with the Yugo instead of getting a rebuilt Iskra starter. The Iskra was considerably cheaper though.

As a matter of note: my electrical rebuild guy said he couldn’t get the starter drive for the 1500 5spd anymore. I don’t know if that’s a fact or not, but a cursory search turned up one vendor that had them. The parts and labor to have the old one rebuilt was just shy of what a gear reduction starter costs.
