In my case it would seem a lot more like hard work to fiberglass than it would to weld. That’s not to say it would end up a thing of beauty, but if the point is to stabilize the rust and not impair the structure, the answer is probably more about what you are comfortable with than a purely “right” thing.

the point of the discussion was really to determine if there were any fatal issues with using glass, not if one was necessarily better than the other. In my case some spots are easy to weld in patch panels and others are so convoluted that welding is problematic unless whole sections are removed first. I don't want to get into removing the seat supports or floor bracing.

My final product will by a hybrid of welding and glass.

There are numerous shops and people now using super strength epoxies and swearing by them. They'll cut the metal like they are going to weld it, use these adhesives, and then grind, etc just like they welded it. Apparently some of these are stronger than welds.

True, but in my case it's not the actual welding that's the problem, it's fabricating a piece that has multiple bends, corners and whatnot that make fabrication all but impossible for someone like me.

At some point in the mid-70's Pininfarina modified the passenger floor to accommodate both the re-routing of the exhaust to the passenger side and the provision of a cat under the passenger floor. However, many 49-state Spiders continued to be sold without cats for several years. If you have a floor that's been stamped for a cat and there is no cat, you may be able to simplify its replacement panel. Also, if you use a piece of 20 gage steel sheet, you may not need to copy the details stamped in to stiffen the lighter gauge original over the cat area.

My 75 does have the cat bump but car has no cat. I have considered removing the bump. I'll have to extend the seat support bracket downward but that's easy enough to do.
