Blocked Out License Plate #'s

Post by fp55scca » Wed Feb 06, 2019 2:49 pm

--Many, if not most posters go to great lengths to block the license plate from view when posting car pics on the internet; yet, cars are driven all over the place with license plates in clear view.... Why is that? I keep hearing the term "scam" used as a rationale, but what is the scam?

Good question Jim,

It's right up there with protecting your checking account number... that's printed on every check you write...

There’s a collection of ridiculous license plate blocks from Craigslist ads called Craig’s finger or something like that.

I suppose, if you have a very hard to find & lucrative to steal car , your plate can be used fairly simply to track an address....but 1. In that case, what do you do when you drive the car, 2. You probably have excellent security & 3. If you really need to protect the storage location of your car it would not be hard to spoof the legal registration info. I chalk it up to some stupid safety tip someone started sharing as a joke to see how many people do it or another symptom of the total degradation of trust & common sense.

As a counterpoint, back in the old days of land lines, & printed “city directories” where you could look up a phone number by an address or an address by a phone number, I used that as a resource to track down interesting cars I saw sitting abandoned but couldn’t catch someone at home and to “pre-screen” classified ads for cars since there were never photos in the printed listings.

It's hard going off the grid as my son and I joke about. But then if you were off the grid you wouldn't be posting on Craigslist. Hey, if they can find compromising pictures of my governor's med school year book "they" can find out all about you and your cars with or without your license plate.

And whatever you do, please don't walk under a ladder.

--So maybe I'll just start posting license plate pics!!
