124 Spider Abarth Stradale Build

Post by ST3Racer » Sun Aug 04, 2019 2:44 am

I have had some discussion on the Racers Forum regarding a historical write-up on a build I performed on a ’74 CS1 Spider, transforming it into a 124 Spider Abarth Stradale replica. This build took 15 years to complete (fully complete in 2017), and I have many print to digital, and digital photos that cover this build. Also, I have reference material photos to show, as well. So, if there is interest in me documenting this build, I will continue.

I think that's a no brainer, we would love to see the write-up. I know Jim Scurria is building one (full commitment is when you move the gas filler to it's proper location in front of the trunk lid). The closest I ever got was painting my hood black.

Absolutely

Start a thread in “photos” or write it up in Word and create a pdf and we can put it in the library. Whatever you’re most comfortable doing!

Brad,
Why in Photos? It's a build, and they seem to be here in B/S? I can do this piecemeal, but not all at once, which is why I picked B/S.

It doesn’t matter really.

Perhaps we need a forum for stories. Really the “photos” forum was supposed to capture stuff like this, but we aren’t all that concerned.

OK. This will cover the concept, planning, measuring, parts collecting, and execution of this build. The history of the 1014 Abarth Stradale homologation specials was not clearly known to me until 6 months after I purchased the car in 1999. In ‘99, I owned two 124 Spiders, both dedicated racecars. I had a ’72 Spider 1608 SCCA ITC car, and a ’69 124 Spider 2L SCCA E Production car.

A friend and neighbor in Cincinnati, where I lived at the time, was interested in getting into racing and came to me with an idea to purchase an MG Midget that hadn’t been raced in many years. He looked to me for advice. The Midget was a deep project, and I suggested that he look for a FIAT 124 Spider to run in either ITC, or ITB, as they were competitive at the time in those SCCA classes. I was surprised that it didn’t take him long to find a solid ’74 Spider that would do nicely, and we worked together to get IT prep going on this chassis by stripping it, and sending it to my brother Mark in Akron (rollcageguy.com) for the cage work. While the work was being done (the floor plates were welded in), I got an opportunity to relocate to Denver, Colorado. Having two racers was not in my plans moving forward, so I negotiated a trade for the ’74, and he got a ready to race ITC Spider.

The last street FIAT I had was back in the mid 80’s (another ’74 Spider), and I really wanted a street 124 again, so I moved the stripped car to Denver. Before it was packed onto the trailer, it received a fresh 1756cc 9.8:1 shortblock, with balanced stock rods, balanced crank, and .5mm over Kolbenschmidt pistons. The top deck of the engine block was securely covered over - no head.

This ’74 with really thick, acid yellow paint, sat in my car shop at home for nearly 3 years before restoration began.
