Carl's 80 spider for sale

Post by friedman » Tue Mar 06, 2018 8:04 am

1980 Fiat 124 spider

Was owned and restored by me many years ago, sold to a friend about six years ago and bought back by me in early 2017. Spent 2017 going through it all over again.

Rust is minimal with the rear arches redone and a few small holes in the floor repaired during my first ownership. Body was repainted during my first ownership but has faded over the years. Polished up decently but a few areas need attention, basically a 20 footer.
During recommissioning last year I installed a rebuilt 2L motor with 4mm domed pistons, new bearings, new water pump and belts, undented oil pan. New clutch kit and clutch cable installed. Dual 40 IDFs, new Auto Ricambi sport exhaust. Gearbox in excellent shape. Excellent used gas tank installed along with all new hoses. New stainless steel flex brake lines installed. New top few months ago and new tires. Rest of my efforts was going through everything to make sure everything works as it should.

Features of the car:

14” Superlite wheels (5th matching wheel included). As noted, new tires in 2017

Red Konis with shortened springs, nice ride height but not too low to comprise ground clearance.

WHOA front brakes, rebuilt stock rear calipers

Autopower roll bar

Good interior with replacement seat/shoulder belts. Shallow 140 speedometer with matching tach, mechanical oil pressure gauge
Debumpered, early mesh grill, halogen headlights, black hood and cowl but comes with color matched hood and cowl. Will throw in Parrish hard top in decent shape.

Like to get $4,000 but will reduce $500 if you want a 32ADF installed instead of the IDFs.

Please email me if you have questions or want more specific pictures or just want to chat about the car.

Nice spider with many tasteful upgrades. Need cash and driveway space to play with the two X1/9s I now have.

Car located in Northern Virginia.

Another nicely prepared example of the 124 from Carl! I was wondering if the 2018 installment were going to be a 124 or an X1/9, and I was betting X1/9. Having been the recipient of the 2016 & 2017 offerings, I can offer that this would be a wonderful car to own. Carl said 20', I'd say 5-10', but maybe I need new contacts.

Carl, do you mind me sharing this with the online/Facebook world? Sometimes I feel like those folks could use a reminder that at the core these a sports cars that happen to look kinda pretty at a show.

The car is well known in the DC club. I believe "froggy" is its unofficial name. Many years ago it needed some paint and John Erskine did a beautiful job. A few of us were startled at the time to see Carl driving a car with a decent paint job.

Carl what's with the dashboard? I thought you were beyond that.

Ralph, not sure what you mean, it's a stock dashboard with the chrome highlights on the center panel painted over and an oil gauge in place of the stupid clock.

It was a joke, your last spider and X were without a dash, just basic controls.

Looks to be a little low price for all you did on that car...

Why you don't put it on Bring a Trailer website? I would guess this car would reach around 7,000$ on that site...

I would be really curious to see what would be the selling price reached on Bring a Trailer for a car like this :)

Anyway just my thoughts...:)

I thought about that, never done it before although RR did post the 128 wagon on BAT when I was selling it. Prices do seem to be stupidly high. If I don't get any interest here in a week or so (I'll cross post on Xweb too....I don't do spider.com).

Ralph, I had a feeling that's what you meant. My builds always have a theme and this one was a gentleman's express.

I second the suggestion to sell it on BAT. It seems as if well represented cars, along with thoughtful owner responses, bring top $. And you get overseas exposure.
