yes then you need the pivot kit.

Those pieces were completely crapped out on mine. I replaced them in 1994 with new ones and greased the whizz out of them with red lithium grease or something and they have yet to wear out. It seems the factory didn't use the correct grease which dries out and the plastic cup "wallers out" after time creating slop.

So, I'm just about to assemble the shifter on my 1980 spider. I got all new parts for inside the chrome shaft that the shift knob screws onto. Question: how does that assemble onto the shaft coming out of the transmission? Does it just get pushed down onto the trans shaft until it clicks into position? Brad, you said it was hard - does that mean it takes some extra force like hitting the chrome shaft with a wooden or plastic mallet to force it down? I really only want to do this once...

Go back to where I posted the pic of the assembly order. It is sometimes a pain to get the bottom thing to pinch and hold, and sometimes it’s just “snap” and you’re done.

In either case it’s not hard and really makes the shifting nice and vibration free

Make sure the leather shift boot is already installed over the inside shaft before installing the chrome extension. It sits under the chrome extension.
