Fiat born-on date/mfg number tag

Post by bjbrown » Mon Jun 04, 2018 5:38 pm

I'm in the process of installing a new manufacturing number plate on the door jam in my 1980 Fiat Spider. This number plate was missing when I got the car and after a total restoration, I found blank plates available from AR. I have the appropriate plate and know the IDENT No. from the VIN tag (which thankfully remained with the car), but have no idea when the car was manufactured. This date-of-manufacture is imprinted on the top of the tag and I'd like to get mostly correct. At one point, I found a cross-reference between the mfg no. and date of manufacture, but can no longer find that index. Anyone know where it is?

My VIN no. is 124CS0 * 00170569, so based on other mfg tags I've seen, the IDENT No. should be 0170569. Relying solely on memory (!), I seem to recall that this is a very early 1980 model number possibly manufactured in December 1979 or January 1980.

Lastly, all of these numbers are embossed in the white plastic tag from the back (raised numerals on the front side like on credit cards) and highlighted in black. Anyone have experience in getting these numbers physically added to the tag? Who does this kind of work?

Can anyone help?

I have VIN 170585 on my list of VINs I collected over the years, and the manufacturing date for that car was 01/80. Since that is just 16 cars after yours, there is a good chance yours was also made during January of 1980.

0170480 is on the German Spider Club's list, and also shows 01/80 as build date.

Maybe ask an engraving shop if they could emboss the numbers?

Thanks Csaba! That’s just the confirmation I needed on the number/date. I’m going to take the plate up to an engraver today to see what they can do.

More narrowing facts:

If the car has the removable fuel injection plenum heater then it was made prior to April, 1980. If it has the built-in type with the cap it was after April, 1980. You can see the difference in the microfilm 22b PDF page 100, the film # in the upper right is "78"

If the car has the original brake setup and it has the long brake springs then it was made prior to February, 1980. If it has the small side clips on the brake pads then it was made after February, 1980. This is in the microfilm 23b PDF page 19 upper right it "137."
