shift boot install

Post by jlwhitney35 » Sun Jun 10, 2018 4:50 pm

Can someone tell me, when installing the leather boot to the metal plate, does the wood trim also get assembled with the metal ring? Or does it just slip over the top after the shift boot has been affixed to the metal plate?

Thanks
Jeff

Do you mean the metal ring that sandwiches the boot against the wood trim?

You can do this by removing the rivet or spot weld (as described) to by slightly bending the ring. Both work fine:

To install a boot correctly you have to remove the shifter chrome extension; then,
Remove the wooden piece and metal backing plate from the center console
Remove the rivet or spot weld from the metal ring
Place the ring inside your leather boot
Place the boot with ring inside the hole in the wood/metal pieces.
Force the ring to clamp against the wood/metal, sandwiching the boot
Rivet, screw, or spot weld the ring
Remove the wood/metal/boot
Optionally replace the bushings in the shift extension
Replace the shift extension

The boot is often installed wrong, study a picture of it - it fits over the interior shift rod but the chrome extension sits "in" the boot, like it is being pillowed.

well ours is all wrong then...but I like it :) . We didn't put the extension over the boot, the boot goes up the extension. Just liked how it looked.

The brochures section of the library is often worth reviewing when trying to match how things were originally fitted.

Sigh. Wish I'd thought of the library before I reassembled the shift boot last month. That does look better, Brad; appreciate the post.
