1972 124 spider parts car in Oregon

Post by Nolan » Tue Jul 10, 2018 4:12 pm

Found some rust issues that were insurmountable on the frame (frame on either side of front passenger suspension is eaten through). Was planning to restore, engine/trans is in great shape though. Would be a great donor for a car with a solid body but a blown engine.

Little stunned that my project died in the water so quickly, I'm 2k into the car plus front seals have been replaced, new head gasket, alternator, water pump, timing belt, thermostat, etc, would come with the gear reduction starter, clutch, throw out bearing, rear main seal I planned on putting into it.

Had compression test done, 150 across the board and no smoke, need valve adjustment.

I don't know what a fair price is but if you need it lets talk.

I'm no expert, but that frame rail corrosion seems unusual for an Oregon car, unless it lived on the coast. Have you consulted with anyone who welds for a living about what a repair would cost?

Nolan,
Sorry, that really sucks. I dunno I saw the headline and looked at a couple pix and about 4 things ran through my head. First when I saw the headline was, oh I wonder if he has a good top and frame he'd sell cheap. Then I see you did a bit of work there, nice job. Two, I recognize that car from an add, I thought it was nicer but maybe over-priced at the time. Three, don't set the head down that way without something underneath holding up the ends, so that it cannot bend the valves at all. That can cause problems you may notice later after re-installation. Four, I don't see a lot of pix of the rust maybe it ain't terminal (hopefully) :? but there is some crazy funky undercoating? But hard to tell for sure. I'd rather not give you the bad news on value, but I would be willing to come check it out, see how it looks and maybe if anything can be done. Where you at?
Also do you know which engine it has and if its original?
Oh, and welcome to the club.

--Dave, the head (124AC.000) is a 1608, and the block appears to be, but no way to tell if it's original.

More pics of what you consider terminal rust might help us guide you on what to do with the car.

Hi Nolan,
Welcome to the club, no spitting on the floor.
Where in Oregon are you? I live in Portland, and have a '72 sport coupe that came without an engine, so I'm interested, let's talk.
