1971 tail light

Post by Sscottdvm » Thu Aug 09, 2018 10:27 pm

My 1971 spider came with the correct tail light assembly on the right side but one from a 78 on the left. They are both broken and no chrome left on them. The 1978 has an obvious gap on the outside. Since I can’t seem to find any decent 1971 does anyone have any suggestions for a fix using different year lights?

My understanding is that the 71 taillights are rarer than unicorn horns and it's not unusual to find a later model light installed. As you note, though, the hole in the body is different.

You might contact John Erskine as he has dealt with this issue before.

--Scott, how interested are you in keeping the car original? ....because it's relatively easy to convert a '71 and early 72 from the longer tail lights to the shorter ones used from late '72 thru '78. The conversion involves welding in about a 1/2" strip into the outboard sides of the tail light openings.

I don’t weld and would have to get someone to do it. Then painting and prep it might be easier to pay a bit more if I can find a left side assembly and get the other side rechromed. I guess I could get some new later model lights and squeeze some black caulk in the space.

Fiatplus/ Chris Obert lists one http://www.fiatplus.com/RIGHT-TAIL-LAMP ... 0131N.html

If you have exhausted the usual suspects, try ebay italy and start googling using the part numbers.

When I repainted my 71 I made the holes ~1/2" narrower on the outside, so I could use the 1972-78 type taillights.

Actually on another 71 I used the 72-78 taillights with new gaskets and no welding, and the new gaskets were just about wide enough to cover the holes. Probably not 100% water proof.

I don't know if you'd have much luck on eBay Italy, as only the US models had these taillights.

I saw the one on Fiat plus, I have a right assembly, that will need rechroming. I really need the left. I think I’ll probnaly end up getting a new pair of later models and try to add some black caulking to the outside of the gasket.
