Project Lancia Beta available in Northern NJ

Post by jgoodfellow » Tue Sep 04, 2018 12:08 pm

I got a note from an old acquaintance, Pete McCarthy, who owns a small shop
in Newton NJ, North of Hackettstown. He has had a customer's car stored inside
for about 6 years, and says it has been garaged probably for the past 20.

The owner is ill, and not going to rebuild the engine, which Pete has pulled out of the car.
Pete says the car is way too nice to be parted. It's an '81 2L, Fuel Injected 5 Speed - Red with black interior.
He doesn't want to get in the middle, will just provide contact information to interested parties.

Pete is midnightautopete@ptd.net

John, you could probably get more traction on this by going to the shop and taking some pictures.

Carl ol' buddy... you appear to have forgotten how long it takes to get off Long Island. From me to Newton is about 3 hours
each way, if I'm lucky. I don't know the car or the seller, have no motivation to go take pictures.

My first note about this car went to Ralph, at NJ Fiats, figuring they are a very active bunch and in the same State.
Failing that, there might be Lancisti or two lurking here... that's all I'm up for.

Best,

John

Hi John,

I sent Wally a note, he might be interested. I'm afraid to go look at it in case the car follows me home.

I had an 81 2L Beta and it was a vary, very nice driving car, with cold AC and comfortable seats ... sold it while it was running well .... afraid of the cramped FWD innards .. way more complex compared to a Fiat 124 .. anything ... lol

They are indeed great driving cars with many luxury accoutrements frequently lacking on 124's and similar Fiats, like leather seats and power windows. They also have the advantage of improved front wheel drive traction, a larger back seat than a spider, and that built in rollbar. Even in hot weather you can keep the targa top on to avoid direct sun but put down windows and rear convertible top for great airflow. A little harder to work on transverse rather than longitudinally mounted engine, but with the FI once its set up it can be less commonly something to worry about. Also tended to be more solidly built with better corrosion protection than most 124's. Would be a great project for someone. Alas I already have several projects and am safely across the country.

I have an 82 Zagato in my collection. I recently purchased it. It is the 3rd Zagato i have owned for a personal car. I have parted out probably 30 or so of them during my life. Having said that, I would not hesatate to buy and drive one daily or as a fun weekend car. They are very reliable and much easier to work on than their modern ( front wheel drive) counterparts. Plenty of parts availability. If it was closer to me my wife would already be yelling...again!!!
