Wiper motor wiring help and advice please

Post by harpdevice » Sat Sep 15, 2018 12:42 am

Hello,
I wired an OSLV wiper motor in my 71 spider to replace a rusted out motor.
The fast speed works. The wipers stops pointing up. The intermittent knob does not work.
I've been googling for hours trying to get some kind of info.
I used this picture found on a forum to help me match up the order in the connector:

Before I dive back in tomorrow, does anyone have any help to offer?
Did I connect it upside down?
Thanks,
Kevin

What is OSLV???

Earlier Spiders used a 5 wire motor (up to 1970) because the speed knob was a rheostat. In 71 they went to the 2 position knob (slow and very slow speed :-) and 6 wire motor.

If the wipers do park (return to the same position after being shut off), but in the wrong position, then the arm on the motor is in the wrong position.
It has to be pointing toward the wiper pivots (ie pushing as much as possible) in the position where it stops. On most wiper motor you can just unbolt the arm, pry it off and move it to a different position.

I mostly have experience with the 6 wire system. My question is if early cars used a rheostat to control wiper speed was the steering column wiper switch 2 position "off-on" and not 3 position "off- delay- on" like the later models?

I reinstalled the wires and now I get slow and fast but no intermittent. I checked the wires according to the electrical troubleshooting guide on this site. Probably the used motor I bought is faulty. Not a big deal to not have intermittent.
I reposition the arm now that the motor was “home” after being energized. That corrected where it parked. It swipes below it’s parked position...is that normal?
One thing that I’m had trouble with is the wipers wiped beyond the bottom of the windshield. I took the wipers off and adjusted for that but now their home position seems too high. They also don’t swipe far enough into the window. I need to re-re-readjust them.
Frustrating!

It was 3 position like the later Spiders.

I have not heard of OSLV. The proper wiper motors for the Spiders are available.

It sounds like you have gotten the arm closer, but still not at exactly the correct position. When it's correct it will park in the fully down position.
