Re: Fiat 131 "Abarth style" shift extension

Ralph,

I have a remote shifter from an Australian Super Brava, based on the Abarth shifter design, though obviously modified for larger scale production. Unfortunately it is incomplete and has some damage. The reverse lockout mechanism is missing. The standard 131 shifter lockout does not substitute. Also the gray plastic socket 'that sits in the shift rod yoke is split though the yoke holds it together when mounted. Let me know if you are interested. Some pictures attached.

There is a local machine shop that I used in the past to make some parts for the Scorpion. I'll bring him the parts and see if he can come up with any ideas. Other than that time to ask our European "allies"

Do you plan to install the 131 trans in a 124 Spider ? Are you planning to use the 131 bellhousing and 131 clutch actuating arm ? There is a way to get the shift lever in a Spider friendly location without the extension.

Attached is picture of the top of the stock 131 direct shifter showing the external reverse lock out used on it. The remote shift lever is spring loaded to lean towards the driver and does not engage it properly. Also there is excess clearance between the shift lever ball when properly seated and the underside of the remote shifter casting. The spring washer and large brass washer shown on the right side of the picture are just my fabrications to allow me to test the shifter on a 131 transmission. That gap inside the shifter casting suggests that the either the lock-out mechanism was mounted internal to the shift lever opening rather than being bolted externally like the direct shifter or there are additional pieces missing.

A picture of the missing lock-out mechanism or a parts diagram showing a blowup of the 131 remote shifter would help. I suspect the Australians may be off more help than the Europeans since that's were this late remote shifters originates.

Hi Joe,

Yes I plan on installing the trans in a spider. Can you explain on how to move the shifter?

Thanks

Ralph, to much to bla bla bla with two paragraphs of "how I did it" look at the pics...of my 131 install in, the dimensions of the transmission "hump" is unchanged .. visualize the 124 Spider plastic bits over the tunnel … will the exits work out … I don't know Good luck..... I think a I "gave" a detailed explanation on this forum before
