recommendations for a bench vise?

Post by miker » Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:35 pm

In my old house, I just bought some generic thing at Home Depot or Sears. I had to leave it behind when we moved.

What do you guys like for a bench vise for mostly automotive tasks?

Old made-in-USA "machinist" bench vises are my favorite. Strong as can be, heavy, with big screws, big handles, etc. I like fixed bases (non-swivel) so it doesn't move on you when you're really giving it the beans.

Mine is an old Parker that I have mounted on a custom stand. The stand & vise are heavy enough to not move under most use. The stand provides much more clearance for clamping large/odd-shaped objects than if the vise was on a bench. And it can be moved around the shop or outdoors depending on the work. Plus, bench space is always in short supply so why eat up valuable real estate with a vise?

Yost FSV-4. Low profile, 360 swivel, double swivel lock. It's a click up from cheap but won't last forever. Neither will I. I understand Sears may soon be having a sale of vices and store fixtures. Yost made some of the better Craftsman vices.

Floor space is at a premium in my garage, so the Yost looks like the right answer.

Thank you both!

Swap meet! Most of the new vices don't compare to some of the old sturdy (potentially US made) versions. Keep your eyes peeled. I picked up a very solid one last year for my brothers new garage for $10. Check behind the main building or out at PIR.
