Slam the hood?

Post by paulc » Fri May 17, 2019 10:12 pm

Have to really slam the hood on our 79 Spider to get it to latch closed.
Normal??
Tried adding shims under the hood catch and adjusting the latch on the firewall to no avail.

I've had some Spiders where I had to slam the hood and had others where it was not needed. Make sure the latch is adjusted properly left to right as well as proper height. Maybe go all the way up on the latch, see how is it to close it, and if the hood sits too high then go down little by little?

I've taken the latch off the car and cleaned it thoroughly, usually through immersion in kerosene overnight, and very lightly oiled it afterward. Along with the door latches this seems to make the biggest difference in their smooth operation (i.e. on the 69 the passenger side door required one to physically slam it to close, after cleaning it's just finger-touch to close).

Clean, lube and adjust as noted above. You should never have to slam the hood to get it to latch. Let's have a little compassion for our Fiats!

My hood latches best if I drop it from about 1 foot. I don't try and push it down.

--Absolute ditto to what Carl said. Never slam, or drop the hood of a Fiat Spider. With the hood adjusted and lubricated properly, as noted above, just sit the hood over the latch; and then using the palm of the hand, press firmly, directly over the latch to lock.

I always have Jim proof read my responses before posting them to make sure he agrees with me.
